Why Buy Local?
Share
At Flower Farm Floristry, we grow most of our flowers right here on our family-run arable farm in Burscough. We’ve always believed in keeping things local—whether that’s where we grow, where we deliver, or who we support. But what does buying local really mean, and why does it matter?
Here’s why we think it makes a difference—not just for floristry, but for all the little businesses that make our communities tick.
Fresher, Better Quality
When you buy local flowers, they haven’t spent days in transit or weeks in cold storage. Our homegrown stems are usually picked within 24 hours of delivery—so they look better, last longer, and smell amazing. That freshness and dainty wild look we love, is something you can’t get from flowers flown halfway around the world which need to be tough and rigid to survive transportation.
The same goes for food, gifts, and handmade goods. Local often means fresher, more personal, and full of care.
Supporting Local People
When you shop with small, local businesses, you’re helping real people—your neighbours—keep doing what they love. You’re not funding a shareholder’s bonus; you’re helping someone pay their rent, buy seeds for next season, or put their child through Uni.
For us, every bouquet sold means we can plant more flowers, invest in better tools, and keep doing what we love: growing and sharing seasonal blooms with our community.
Lower Carbon Footprint
Locally grown flowers and food have fewer air miles. Fewer lorry journeys. Less plastic packaging. When you buy from us, your bouquet might travel a mile or two down the road—not 3,000 miles in a refrigerated container.
We strongly believe that although we aren’t perfect, every little step toward a lower carbon footprint makes a difference.
Flowers That Reflect the Seasons
One of the joys of buying locally is being more connected to the seasons. We love creating arrangements that change with the time of year—tulips and narcissus in spring, sweet peas and cosmos in summer, rich dahlias and grasses in autumn.
They reflect what’s growing right here in Lancashire soil—and often surprise people with just how beautiful local can be.
Community Matters
When you support local small business, you help keep your community vibrant and diverse. You get to know the people behind the products. You start seeing familiar faces at the wharf, on the high street, and even at your front door with a bouquet in hand.
It’s about connection, not just convenience. And that’s something we all need a bit more of.
In a Nutshell…
Buying local isn’t always the cheapest or fastest option, but sometimes it is, it’s always worth an investigate, never presume the big names can’t be beaten.
You’re choosing quality over quantity, people over profit, and real value over throwaway culture.
So whether you’re buying flowers, bread (we highly recommend Lagos by the way!), a lovely afternoon tea (look up The Farm, Burscough) or eggs from an honesty box at the end of the lane—thank you for choosing local.
It really does mean the world.
