Our Top Tips on making fresh flowers last!
If you are the lucky recipient of (or indeed treat yourself to) some beautiful fresh flowers this Christmas (from us or anywhere), here is our guide on keeping them looking gorgeous for as long as possible.
1. Heat…….My cousin once described the week between Christmas and New Year perfectly……..It’s just going from one hot living room to another! If I am feeling wilty by the end of it, I can only imagine how your flowers are feeling. Fresh, cut flowers don’t like to be too hot, it is best to display them away from radiators, fireplaces and other sources of heat.
2. Fruit…….If I’m honest the most fruit I eat over Christmas is in a Christmas cake or fruit & nut bar, but it still sits there in it’s bowl looking hopeful that someone might enjoy it. Flowers and fruit are not friends, especially Bananas (and apparently sprouts as they give off the same gas as Bananas, there’s definitely a joke in there somewhere), to keep your flowers fresh for longer don’t display them near your fruit bowl.

3.Water….Much like myself the morning after a few mulled wines, your flowers need plenty of fresh water. Keep an eye on the water level, and top up daily so that all the stems are drinking. If you have a fresh Christmas table centre, these still benefit from a little top up, do so carefully with a watering can or jug and they will really thank you for it.
4. Flower Food……Flowers from us will always come with flower food. When Clare was a floristry lecturer they did many experiments with flower food and other traditional methods of keeping flowers fresh and flower food always came out on top, so we really advocate it’s use. If you have flowers that came in a vase, there will be food in the water ready for you and also some extra provided. If your flowers are in a bunch there will be some attached for you. We recommend changing the water for fresh every few days and using the flower food then.
5. Trim the stems & whizz anything that looks iffy….. When you change the water is the ideal time to take a cm or two off the bottom of your flowers, this helps them to take on more water and stops the water from looking murky, and keeps any unpleasant smells at bay. While you are at it, have a good look through and whip out anything that looks like it is on it’s last legs. Some varieties last much longer than others and a bit of time spent doing this means you can keep your flowers for longer, even if you switch for a smaller vase it is worth the effort to enjoy your blooms for as long as possible.
